The above photo is of the 2015 Kansas/Hawaii youth on Washington D.C. Youth Tour at the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial. 

Nemaha-Marshall Electric Cooperative sponsors two students each year to participate in the Washington D.C. Youth Tour in June held at Washington D.C. or the Cooperative Youth Leadership Camp in July held at Steamboat Springs, Colorado.  The students experience a week long all-expense paid trip to learn first hand about leadership, politics, community development, social issues and electric cooperatives.

Highlights of the Washington D.C. Youth Tour Trip

  • Participate and visit historic sites
  • Explore the Smithsonian museums
  • Take a cruise on the Potomac River
  • Meet with their Senators and House Representatives where they discuss the process of government
  • Discuss current issues
  • Increase their knowledge of cooperative electric utilities and American History

Highlights of the Cooperative Youth Leadership Camp

  • Experience the beautiful Rocky Mountains
  • Go whitewater rafting, dancing & shopping
  • Participate in the legislative forum and build a transmission line
  • Increase their knowledge of cooperative electric utilities
  • Visit Steamboat Springs and Fish Creek Falls
  • Tour Trapper Coal Mine and Craig Generation Plant


  • Must be a junior in high school in the Nemaha-Marshall Electric Cooperative service area-need not be a member
  • Contact your local high school guidance counselor to apply
  • Applicants must also participate in a personal interview in January and a multiple choice, true/false test, at our office in Axtell
